Verse of Rice for Spirits (Saba ge 生飯偈)

Verse chanted at main meal time (saiji 齋時) (midday meal) in conjunction with an offering of seven grains of rice that monks take from their individual bowls to feed hungry ghosts:

You host of spirits,
I now give you an offering.
This food is given to all spirits
throughout the ten directions.
jiten kijinshu  汝等鬼神衆
gokin suji kyu  我今施汝供
suji hen jihō  此食偏十方
ishi kijin kyu  一切鬼神供
