Open to all, we are dedicated to bringing the teachings of The Buddha, as illuminated by the wisdom of Dogen Zenji, to America.
A family orientated practice Temple, Zenshuji is located in the busy heart of Los Angeles in the Little Tokyo/Artist district. We offer Zen Practice for the Lay practitioner in a uniquely Japanese/American style setting.

Zenshuji Soto Mission was originally founded in 1922 in the home of Mr. and Mrs Toyokichi Nagasaki. Four years later the original Zenshuji Temple building was built on the same site as the existing building. The new Zenshuji Temple bulding was dedicated in 1969.
The initial concept of Zenshuji was for it to be a Mission that would serve the growing Japanese American population of southern California. Zenshuji, the first Soto Zen temple on the mainland, was also, for 60 years, the headquarters of Soto Zen Buddhism in North America. The rapid growth of Soto Zen Buddhism in the last thirty years has seen the folding of the North American Headquarters office into the International Education Center offices now located in San Francisco.
The growth of interest in Soto Zen meditation practice led Zenshuji to construct an authentic style of meditation hall patterned after the Zendo at Eiheiji Monastery in Japan. Carpenters from Japan were engaged for it's construction .
Zenshuji offers many activities to it's members and the public that are religious and cultural in nature. Zazen is offered 3 times per week and there are weekly and monthly services are also open to the public. There is a monthly Buddhist lecture class given as well as a bi weekly beginning Buddhism class. Tea Ceremony, Shakyo class and Goeika are offered as well as classes in computer, Taiko drumming and Japanese. Other activities include Fujinkai, SBA (Senior Buddhist Association) and karaoke.
