The Anchorage Zen Community and its practice space, Uto-an, are committed to providing authentic Soto Zen Buddhist practice and teachings to all who are interested. The AZC first gathered about 30 years ago—members met in garages, living rooms, offices, and yoga studios to practice zazen. Katagiri-roshi was our first visiting teacher; later his students came, then other prominent teachers from around the country. Our first resident priest, Tozen Akiyama, joined us in 2001, followed by Reverend Koun Franz in 2006.

In summer 2007 we moved into our own facility, Uto-an. Here, in addition to our daily sitting and chanting schedule, we offer weekly public talks, newcomers’ orientation, evening zazen, study groups, full moon ceremonies, one-day sitting and work practice events, kesa sewing, and we just started a Dharma School for young children.
Outside the walls of Uto-an, in the greater Anchorage community, we hold residential sesshin and put on a Buddhist Film Series, and beyond Anchorage, members volunteer at state prisons.
