(Inglés)
The 110th Anniversary of Soto Zen Buddhism Teaching Activities in Hawaii and the 100th Anniversary of Soto Mission of Hawaii, Shoboji was held on November 9 and 10. The event's theme was "Shuon – Moving Forward with Gratitude" signifying our giving gratitude and thanks to all those that have helped Soto Zen Buddhism in Hawaii flourish to what it is today.
The first day of the event was held at Soto Mission of Hawaii, Shoboji, starting the program with Keynote Speech by Dr. Willa Jane Tanabe of University of Hawaii, talking about the architectural history of 9 temples of Sotoshu temples in Hawaii. After the lecture, we began our services, starting with the "Memorial Service for Deceased Members of Hawaii Sotoshu Temples," officiated by Rev. Shugen Komagata, Director of Soto Zen Buddhism Hawaii Office.
The event then was followed by "Gokei Sanpai" (Three prostrations with five rings of bell), welcoming the officiants from Japan, Rev. Koho Maruko, Assistant Administrator of Daihonzan Eiheiji, Rev. Taido Kojima, Director of Education and Dissemination Division of Sotoshu Shumucho, and Egawa Shinzan Zenji, Abbot of Daihonzan Sojiji. As the officiants were greeted, the event continued with "Memorial Service for Deceased Ministers of Hawaii Sotoshu Temples," officiated by Rev. Koho Maruko.
After the service, we all moved to the Japanese garden outside of the temple and the "Eye Opening Blessing Service for Hoko Jizo Bodhisattva," was officiated by Egawa Shinzan Zenji, and was given the name of "Hoko Jizo" by Egawa Zenji.
Welcome dinner prepared by the Soto Mission Women's Association was held at the social hall of Shoboji. A few entertainments by the temple's music group were performed to welcome all the guests who had attended that day.
On the November 10th, over 600 people gathered to attend the event. Approximately 400 members from Hawaii and over 200 guests from Japan, North America, South America and Europe gathered for the event that was held at Sheraton Waikiki. The service program began with the "Celebration Service of 110 Years of Sotoshu in Hawaii," officiated by Rev. Taido Kojima and then followed by "Soto Mission of Hawaii 100th Anniversary Service," officiated by Egawa Shinzan Zenji.
The service went accordingly and moved straight into the Luncheon. The program started with the recognition of awards to ministers who have been serving as Kokusaifukyoshi for over 60 years and 40 years, and other awards. After the award ceremony, lunch was served. From the looks of many attendees, everyone seemed to have enjoyed the food as live music has been performed by a local group called "Simple Session." As everyone came to the end of their meal, entertainment began. Taiko, Hula, Sanshin, Japanese traditional dance, and many more groups have joined in to entertain the guests from across the globe. With the finale of taiko performance, the program moved to bon dance, as everyone stood up to make a big circle around the hall and joined in for the dance of Fukushima Ondo.
As the end of the program came near, Rev. Shugen Komagata gave the word of appreciation and thanked everyone who has come to the event. At the end of the speech, he announced to all that Egawa Zenji would be leaving. Everybody stood up to clap their hands as Egawa Zenji was escorted out of the ballroom and the event came to the end.
The event ended in success, with many guests and friends having enjoyed the event and will remain in our memories, as this celebration created very strong bonds between the people of Hawaii and all the guests from across the globe.
